MP Rhonda Kirkland to Join Oshawa Community as Nigeria Marks 66 Years of Independence

Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day will be marked in Oshawa on Thursday, October 1, with a community gathering bringing together Nigerian residents, members of the wider Black community and other residents of Durham Region.

Organized by DSA Sports Club, in collaboration with Events Aloud Marketing Communications Ltd, the celebration will take place at Sekodu Restaurant on Bloor Street East and will explore Nigerian culture through food, music, lifestyle and community interaction.

Held under the theme “Nigeria @ 66: One People, One Culture, One Nigeria!”, the event will provide an opportunity for members of the Nigerian community to celebrate their heritage while creating connections with the broader Oshawa community.

The celebration will also have a civic dimension, with Rhonda Kirkland, Member of Parliament for Oshawa, attending as Guest of Honor. Her participation reflects the connection between cultural celebrations and community engagement, particularly as Durham Region continues to grow as a diverse and multicultural community.

For organizers, the occasion is not simply about marking a national anniversary. It is also about creating space for people to share culture, build relationships and strengthen connections among Nigerian and Black communities in Oshawa and across Durham Region.

The afternoon celebration is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Sekodu Restaurant, 218 Bloor St E, Oshawa. Attendees can expect Nigerian cuisine, music, cultural entertainment and a lifestyle showcase, with the event welcoming members of the Nigerian community and residents from across Durham Region.
