Adewole’s appointment follows the approval of a fresh round of diplomatic postings by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who assigned 65 ambassadors-designate to various foreign missions and multilateral organisations around the world.
The list includes 31 non-career ambassadors and 34 career diplomats whose nominations were earlier confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the newly appointed envoys have been deployed to key diplomatic missions as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s global engagement and deepen bilateral relations. Under the new postings, Adewole will lead Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Canada.
A distinguished academic and public health expert, Adewole served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan from 2010 to 2015. He later served as Nigeria’s Minister of Health between 2015 and 2019, where he led several reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
His appointment is expected to further deepen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between Nigeria and Canada, particularly in areas such as education, trade, healthcare collaboration, and diaspora engagement.
Nigeria maintains strong bilateral relations with Canada, supported by a vibrant Nigerian diaspora community that continues to play an important role in business, education, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria, is expected to conduct induction programmes for the ambassadors-designate ahead of their formal deployment to their respective missions.
