138 Players Storm Ogun For Obasanjo National Squash Championship

Company, Otunba Yemi Lawal and wife with the National President, Nigeria Squash Federation, Mr. Boye Oyerinde and Chief Akingbade, Chairman, Ogun State Squash Association at press conference heralding the serve-off of the National Squash Championship held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta on Monday.

No fewer than 138 players are currently in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital for the 3rd National Squash Championship billed to hold between Tuesday 31, August and 4th September 2021.


The National President, Nigeria Squash Federation, Mr. Boye Oyerinde disclosed that the players are drawn from the 36 States of the country.


Oyerinde who noted that, the competition is a Professional sanctioned event by International Squash Association said the championship is for senior men and women and U-16 Boys and Girls.


He added that the competition which is the first championship to be held in Nigeria in 2021 will be more round event.


He explained that this is to enable each player to play at least five matches before the elimination stage.


He emphasized that the first round of the competition will be the best of 3 while the semi-finals and finals will be the best of 5.


He, however, maintained that the prize winner for men category is $1,500USD and $1,000USD for women.


Also speaking, the Ogun State Chairman, Squash Association, Hon. Dipo Akingbade stressed that this year's event was to honor former Nigeria's President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.


Akingbade explained that Chief Obasanjo's contribution towards the promotion and development of the squash game cannot be underestimated.


Earlier, the Chairman, Seagle Property Development company, the official sponsor of the championship, Otunba Yemi Lawal assured that, the championship will be annual event to discover talents and groom young athletes for national events.


Otunba Lawal called on the association to influence government at all levels to invest in the Squash game to encourage the players to perform optimally.
